EC to Increase VVPAT Verification from One EVM to Five

In April 2019, the Supreme Court (SC) ordered the Election Commission of India (ECI) to increase the Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips from one Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) per Assembly constituency to five.

  • VVPAT is an independent verification system designed to allow voters to verify that their votes were cast correctly, to detect possible election fraud/malfunction and to provide a means to audit the stored results in case of disputes.
  • In VVPATs, a paper slip is generated bearing serial number, name and symbol of the candidate along with recording of vote in Control Unit. The printed slip is visible ....
