Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed by the Parliament recently. The Citizenship Act, 1955 provides various ways in which citizenship may be acquired.It provides for citizenship by birth, descent, registration, naturalisation and by incorporation of territory into India.
Salient Features of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019
- It grants Indian Citizenship to persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who arrived on or before 31 December 2014 to India after facing persecution on grounds of religion in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, if they fulfil conditions for grant of citizenship.
