New Ministry of Co-operation: A Fillip to the Co-operative Movement

On 6th July, 2021, the Union Government created a new Ministry of Co-operation with an aim to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country.

The subject, ‘Co-operatives’ earlier came under the aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Objective

  • To realise the vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ (through cooperation to prosperity).

Need for Separate Co-operation Ministry

  • Loosing Significance: The significance of the rural cooperative has been shrinking over the years. The last attempt to provide some fillip was 15 years ago when the Union government appointed and accepted the Vaidyanathan Committee findings and recommendations.
  • Less Focus: While cooperatives are a state subject, ....
