Microplastic Pollution in the Ganga

Recently, Delhi-based NGO Toxics Link released a study titled, ‘Quantitative analysis of Microplastics along River Ganga’ according to which the river is heavily polluted with microplastics.

Microplastics

  • Microplastics are synthetic solid particles ranging from 1 micrometre (μm) to 5 millimetre (mm). They are insoluble in water. Microplastics are a major source of marine pollution.

Highlights of the Study

  • The samples of Ganga’s water were collected from Haridwar, Kanpur and Varanasi and microplastics were found in all of them.
  • The water testing was carried out in collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa.
