Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2019
On 11 July, the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Report for the year 2019 was released by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
Findings on India
- India lifted 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016, recording the fastest reductions in the multidimensional poverty index values during the period.
- India’s MPI value reduced from 0.283 in 2005-06 to 0.123 in 2015-16.
- India showed stronger improvements in areas such as “assets, cooking fuel, sanitation and nutrition” during this period, however, positive results were found in all 10 indicators.
