Kerala: First State to Institutionalize Snake Handling

  • Kerala has become the first state to institutionalise snake handling in the country. It has framed guidelines for rescuing snakes from human dominated places and releasing them in uninhabited areas.

Key Features of the Guidelines

  • The guidelines make it mandatory for snake handlers to seek certification. Each district will prepare a list of snake handlers.
  • The short-listed handlers will be required to undergo mandatory training on safe and scientific handling of snakes.
  • They will be required to wear protective gear and equip themselves with safety equipment while on the task.
