The Largest Habitat of Endangered Estuarine Crocodiles

The Bhitarkanika National Park has become the largest habitat of endangered estuarine crocodiles in the country with a record number of their nesting sites spotted, a recent survey done by the Odisha’s Forest Department has revealed.

Reasons for This Increase in Numbers

  • The increase in population was primarily due to the far-sighted measures of the government.
  • In 1975, the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, had started a crocodile breeding and rearing project in Dangamala within the Bhitarkanika Park.
