CRISPR Takes First Steps to Fight Cancer
Scientists in the United States recently tested CRISPR- the gene editing tool- in cancer patients. The test focussed on assessing the safety of the technique; but the primary goal of editing patient’s genes was to enable their immune system to attack cancer. The researchers removed ‘T cells’ from the patients’ blood and used CRISPR to delete three genes thought to interfere with the cancer fighting ability of the cells.
