Environment Clearance to Kaleshwaram Project Violates Law: NGT
The environmental clearance, granted to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) on December 22, 2017 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, was cancelled by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on October 12.
- The NGT has held that environmental clearance (EC) to KLIPwas granted ex post facto, after completion of substantial work, by the MoEF&CC in violation of law.
Issues with the Project
While the Kaleshwaram Project was a lift irrigation system, the state government wrongly claimed, until the grant of EC, that the project was not for lift irrigation, but only for drinking water supply.
