Japan to Rename Senkaku Islands
- A group of disputed islands-Uotsuri, Minamikojima and Kitakojima- are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China and located in the East China. They have been administered by Japan since 1972, but its legal status has remained disputed until now.
- Japan has begun the legal process of complete integration of an island chain over which it has a dispute with China.
- The Ishigaki city council in Japan’s Okinawa prefecture passed a bill to change the name of an administrative area covering the disputed uninhabited island chain to Tonoshiro Senkaku from Tonoshiro, starting from October 1, 2020.
