Swachh Bharat Helped Reduce Ground Water Contamination: UNICEF

  • On 5th June, 2019, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released a study stating that the central government’s flagship scheme -Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), has helped to reduce groundwater contamination in the country.
  • It aimed at assessing the environmental impact and communication footprint of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G).

Swachh Bharat Mission

  • Launched in October 2014 to achieve universal sanitation coverage and to make India clean by 2019.
  • Two sub-missions:Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban)
  • SBM-G

—Aims to eliminate open defecation in rural areas by improving access to sanitation by ensuring use of toilets, besides their construction
