Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019

  • On 12th June, 2019, Union Cabinet approved the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 by replacing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Second Ordinance, 2019.
  • It proposes to declare the practice of triple talaq as void and illegal.

Salient Features of the Bill

  • Cognisable Offence: It makes declaration of talaq cognizable offence, attracting up to 3 years imprisonment with a fine.
  • Allowances: It also provides for payment of subsistence allowance to married Muslim women against whom talaq has been declared and for dependent children. The amount of allowance will be determined by Magistrate.
