Neutrinos and Death of Massive Stars

Recently, researchers from IIT Guwahati have come up with new insights into the part played by neutrinos in the dramatic death of massive stars i.e., Type II supernovas.

Key Finding

  • They have suggested that two-type neutrino oscillation models are inadequate to study Type II supernova and they should be replaced by a three-type neutrino oscillation model is needed to predict well the dynamics of the supernova.

Significance

  • Understanding this is important when one wants to measure the influence of neutrinos and their oscillations on supernova mechanism and heavy element synthesis in stellar environments.
