National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use
Data from ‘National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India’ released by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on February 18 shows that prevalence of opioid use is India is three times the global average — 2.06 per cent in India against 0.70 per cent globally.
Key Findings
- The most common opioid used was heroin. The current use of heroin was 1.14%, followed by pharmaceutical opioids (0.96%) and opium (0.52%). Here, the abuse was found most prevalent in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
