Koneru Humpy Wins Women’s Rapid World Title

On 29th December, 2024, Grandmaster Koneru Humpy crowned a remarkable year for Indian chess by securing her second Women’s Rapid World Title in New York City on Sunday.
- Koneru Humpy clinched the title by defeating Indonesia’s Irine Sukandar with black pieces on Day 3 of the Women’s Rapid Championship.
- She previously won the rapid world title in 2019, becoming the only player other than China’s Wenjun Ju to win the championship twice.
- Another Indian player, Divya Deshmukh, finished her campaign with a total of seven points in the women’s section.
- The victory marks the latest in an outstanding year for Indian chess, with achievements like D Gukesh winning the Candidates and India’s dual Olympiad golds.
- Humpy acknowledged her win as unexpected yet crucial, following a challenging year with subpar performances.
