Koneru Humpy Wins Women’s Rapid World Title

On 29th December, 2024, Grandmaster Koneru Humpy crowned a remarkable year for Indian chess by securing her second Women’s Rapid World Title in New York City on Sunday.

Koneru Humpy clinched the title by defeating Indonesia’s Irine Sukandar with black pieces on Day 3 of the Women’s Rapid Championship.
She previously won the rapid world title in 2019, becoming the only player other than China’s Wenjun Ju to win the championship twice.
Another Indian player, Divya Deshmukh, finished her campaign with a total of seven points in the women’s section.
The victory marks the latest in an outstanding year for Indian chess, with achievements like D Gukesh winning the Candidates and India’s dual Olympiad golds.
Humpy acknowledged her win as unexpected yet crucial, following a challenging year with subpar performances.
