On 29th November, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard conducted the 11th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2024) off Kochi, showcasing advanced coordination and regional collaboration for maritime safety.

  • SAREX-2024, themed Enhancing Search and Rescue Capabilities Through Regional Collaboration, emphasized international cooperation in maritime safety and was inaugurated by Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.
  • The two-day event featured workshops, table-top exercises, and a large-scale sea exercise simulating a passenger aircraft crash 150 nautical miles northwest of Kochi.
  • The coordinated response to the simulated crash included resources from the ICG, Indian Air Force, Cochin Port Authority, Kochi Water Metro, and Kerala State Administration, with advanced technologies like Jason Cradle and drone-deployed lifebuoys.
  • Key operations demonstrated included life raft drops, passenger evacuation using Advanced Light Helicopters, and crew rescues, showcasing seamless coordination among agencies.
  • Over 38 foreign observers participated, contributing to the exchange of strategies, validation of standard operating procedures, and strengthening maritime contingency frameworks.
