Tera Hertz Spectrum Experimental Authorisation

  • 22 Aug 2024

On 21st August, 2024, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended the introduction of a new experimental authorisation for the 95 GHz to 3 THz spectrum, aimed at fostering R&D and technology trials.

  • The new authorisation, termed "Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation" (THEA), is proposed to promote research, indoor and outdoor testing, technology trials, experimentation, and demonstration within the 95 GHz to 3 THz range.
  • THEA aims to facilitate the marketing of experimental devices designed to operate in this spectrum range through direct sales.
  • Eligibility for obtaining THEA will be extended to a wide range of Indian entities, including academic institutions, R&D labs, government bodies, public sector units, and telecommunications service providers.
  • The authorisation period for THEA is proposed to be up to five years, with the possibility of extensions in five-year increments.
  • TRAI has suggested a nominal authorisation fee of Rs 1,000 for a five-year period to encourage innovation and development in the Tera Hertz band.
  • The initiative is expected to support the "Make in India" campaign by providing a platform for entrepreneurs and academia to develop cutting-edge technologies and services in the Tera Hertz spectrum.
