- 22 Aug 2024
On 20th August 2024, Union Minister Manohar Lal launched the Disaster Resilient Infrastructure for Power Sector (DRIPS) online portal, aiming to strengthen disaster preparedness and response in India’s power sector.
- Recent natural disasters like Cyclone Fani, floods in Jammu & Kashmir, and extensive flooding in Kerala have exposed the vulnerability of India’s power infrastructure.
- Coastal states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Bengal face unique challenges due to their geographic locations, making disaster preparedness in the power sector crucial.
- The DRIPS portal will enable rapid identification and deployment of necessary resources, ensuring prompt restoration of power during disaster situations.
- Union Minister Manohar Lal emphasized that DRIPS will enhance transparency, coordination, and effectiveness within the power sector during emergencies, reducing human error in crisis situations.
- DRIPS will serve as a central point of contact for nodal officers across various power sector departments, aiding in the management of critical power system equipment and supplies during disasters.
- The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) was responsible for developing DRIPS, which integrates inventory management across power generation, transmission, and distribution sectors.
- The portal currently has 61 registered stakeholders, and its success depends on timely updates of resource inventories by participating utilities to ensure efficient disaster response.
