On 21st August 2024, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) launched a free and open-source software (FOSS)-based operating system, KITE GNU Linux 22.04, for use in three lakh computers across public schools in the state.
- The KITE GNU Linux 22.04 operating system is designed as a complete computing platform suitable for ICT learning in schools, and also for use by students, teachers, and professionals in various sectors.
- The new OS is built on the Wayland system, replacing the xorg window mechanism currently used in school computers, offering enhanced performance and capabilities.
- Customised from the popular FOSS OS Ubuntu, the OS suite includes applications like GCompris, Tux Paint, PictoBlox, Libre Office, Scratch, Krita, and many more, catering to diverse educational and creative needs.
- With artificial intelligence (AI) now part of the Class VII ICT curriculum, the OS includes tools for understanding AI basics, machine learning, computer vision, and other advanced concepts.
- The OS supports comprehensive Malayalam computing, and features tools for ebook reading, desktop publishing, graphics editing, sound and video editing, 3D animation, and more.
- KITE’s initiative to replace licensed software with free alternatives across two lakh computers in schools and vocational training centres has resulted in a Rs. 3,000 crore savings for the state.
