Southern Birdwing Butterfly
- A Southern Birdwing, India's second-largest butterfly species, was recently discovered at the satellite campus of The American College, Madurai.
- It has a wingspan of 190mm, previously holding the title of India’s largest butterfly from 1932 until 2020.
- It was surpassed by the Golden Birdwing, recorded by British Brigadier William Harry Evans, with a wingspan of 194mm, making it the largest butterfly in India now.
- While the Golden Birdwing is commonly found in the Himalayan region, the Southern Birdwing is native to the Western and Eastern Ghats.
