​Efforts for Conservation of Threatened Species

  • 2,970 plant species found in India (not endemic) have been assessed by the IUCN, with more than 2,043 categorized as 'Least Concern'.
  • Of the remaining species, 155 are Critically Endangered, 274 are Endangered, 213 are Vulnerable, and 80 are Near Threatened, with conservation measures being undertaken by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and other institutions.
  • 7,076 faunal species from India are listed under different categories of the IUCN Red List, with 3,739 protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • BSI conserves plants, including IUCN-listed species, in 16 botanical gardens across various phytogeographical regions.
