New Rules on Elephant Transfer
The Centre has recently introduced the Captive Elephant (Transfer or Transport) Rules, 2024, which ease the conditions for transferring elephants within or between States.
News Rules: What has Changed?
- Elephants, classified as Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife Protection Act, can be translocated for specific purposes such as education, scientific research, and wildlife population management.
- Section 40(2) of the Wildlife Protection Act requires written permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden for acquiring, possessing, or transferring a captive elephant.
- An amendment in 2021 allowed the transfer of elephants for religious or other purposes, potentially increasing the risk of trafficking and illegal transactions.
