Mushroom Cultivation: Fruitful and Lucrative Industry

  • Mushrooms are edible fungi that grow in natural habitats, in wild soil and on wood.
  • Out of more than 14000 species of mushrooms discovered by scientists so far, about 2000 species are edible.
  • Global mushroom production in the year 2021 was 44.2 million tonnes. Shiitake mushroom (26%) has the largest contribution, followed by oyster mushroom (21%), black ear mushroom (21%), button (11%), flammulina (7%), paddy straw mushroom (1%) and other mushrooms (13%).
  • About 0.28 million tonnes of mushrooms are produced annually in India. Here, Mushroom cultivation was first started in 1961 in Solan, Himachal Pradesh.
