75 Years of the Historic First Sitting of Constituent Assembly (CA)
On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly convened in the Central Hall of Parliament House in New Delhi for the first time.
The Assembly was recognized by Section 8 of the Indian Independence Act, 1947.
About Constituent Assembly
- Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946 created the CA of India.
- Composition: Members were chosen by indirect election by the members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies. 292 members were elected through the Provincial Legislative Assemblies; 93 members represented the Indian Princely States; and 4 members represented the Chief Commissioners' Provinces. (Total membership of 389).
