Uniform Civil Code (UCC)

  • The Supreme Court, recently, expressed displeasure on the failure of governments to heed Article 44 of the Constitution to promulgate a UCC for the entire country despite 63 years to the codification of Hindu law in 1956.
  • The Supreme Court also hailed Goa, as the only Indian state which has a uniform civil code applicable to all regardless of religion.

Uniform Civil Code

  • Article 44, a part of Directive Principle of State Policies, directs the state to secure a Uniform Civil Code for its citizens.
  • Personal laws are distinguished from public law and cover marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption and maintenance.
