Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019
On 26th November 2019, the Rajya Sabha passed the bill on protection of rights of transgenders.
- Recently, National Council for Transgender Persons was constituted.
Key Provisions of the Act
- It defines a transgender person as one whose gender does not match the gender assigned at birth.
- It provides for ‘self-perceived gender identity’ i.e. persons can determine their gender on their own. Transgender person may make an application to the District Magistrate for a certificate of identity, indicating the gender as ‘transgender’.
