Justice Amitava Roy (Retd.) Committee on Prison Reforms
- Recently, a Supreme Court-appointed committee headed by Justice Amitava Roy (retd.) to reform prisons submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India giving several suggestions to improve the living conditions in Indian prisons.
Important Recommendations
- Every new prisoner should be allowed a free phone call/day to his family members to see him through his first week in jail.
- The report described the preparation of food in kitchens as “primitive and arduous”. The kitchens are congested and unhygienic and the diet has remained unchanged for years now. Therefore there should be cleaner Kitchens, modern cooking facilities and canteens to buy ....
