J&K Roshni Act

Recently, the J&K High Court has declared Roshni Act “illegal, unconstitutional and unsustainable” and a CBI probe has been ordered into the allotment of land under this law.

Roshni Act

  • Enacted in 2001, the law sought to regularise unauthorised land.
  • The Act envisaged the transfer of ownership rights of state land to its occupants, subject to the payment of a cost, as determined by the government.
  • The proceeds of the act was stated to be used on commissioning hydroelectric projects and hence the name ‘Roshni’.
