Contempt of Court

  • Recently a controversy emerged when the Supreme Court of India took Suo moto action for contempt of court against Social Activist and Lawyer Prashant Bhushan and held him guilty of contempt of court for his tweets which undermined the sanctity of the highest institution of law.

Classification of Contempt

  • Civil Contempt: Under Section 2(b) of the Contempt of Courts Act of 1971, civil contempt has been defined as wilful disobedience of any judgment, decree, direction, order, writ or other process of a court or wilful breach of an undertaking given to a court.
