Theyyam Ritual Art Form
Recently, in an outreach initiative, the Kerala Tourism department hosted a cultural event in Chandigarh in which the performers on stage showcased the state’s unique traditional Theyyam ritual art.
About Theyyam Ritual Art
- Theyyam is a ritualistic dance performed in northern Kerala and parts of Karnataka, often by people who are momentarily treated as God-like entities during the act.
- It is also known as Kaḷiyaṭṭam or Tiṟa.
- It consists of traditions, rituals and customs associated with temples and sacred groves of Malabar.
- Theyyam is carried out from Kaavu during the festivals.
