75 Ramsar Sites in 75th Year of Independence
During 2022, India added 28 sites to the list of Ramsar sites, taking the total number of Ramsar sites to 75 in the 75th year of Independence.
- Tamil Nadu has maximum no. of Ramsar sites (14 nos), followed by UP which has 10 nos. of Ramsar sites.
India’s Wetland Conservation Initiatives
- The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986: It calls for the protection and improvement of the environment, including inter-alia, wetlands.
- The National Environment Policy, 2006: It recognises the ecosystem services provided by wetlands and emphasises the need to set up a regulatory mechanism for all wetlands so as to maintain their ecological character ....
