Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2019 (PBD)

  • It was organized in Varanasi during 21-23 January 2019 and Pravasi Bhartiya Samman awards were given to 30 people by the President of India.
  • During PBD 2019 a Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojna was launched under which Overseas Indians in the age group 45-60 will be taken on nationwide tour of religious places with state sponsorship.
  • Under the Yojana, preference would be given to people from Girmitiya countries. Girmityas or Jahajis are descendants of indentured Indian labourers brought to Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, East Africa, the Malay Peninsula, Caribbean and South America to work on sugarcane plantations by European colonizers.
