70Th Republic Day 2019
- India’s 70th Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January 2019 and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest of the ceremony.
- The theme of this year’s Republic Day was 150th birth year of Mahatma Gandhi.
- The all-women Assam Rifles contingent created history this year by participating for the first time in a Republic Day parade.
- Cultural activities during the parade:
- Karakattam folk dance, Tamil Nadu: It is performed in praise of the rain goddess Mariamman. The performers balance a pot on their head during the dance which symbolizes joy and happiness.
