Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

  • CFCs, comprising chlorine, fluorine, and carbon, find application as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, plastic foam agents, fire extinguishers, electronic cleaning solvents, and food freezing agents.
  • Utilization in Various Industries: About two-thirds of CFC usage is attributed to refrigeration, with the remaining third employed as blowing agents in foam insulation.
  • Diverse Properties of CFCs: CFCs are favoured for their non-corrosive, non-flammable, low-toxicity, and chemically stable characteristics, among others, enabling their wide-ranging applications.
  • Environmental Persistence and Atmospheric Behaviour: Traditional removal methods like photo-dissociation, rain-out, and oxidation are ineffective against CFCs, which remain in the atmosphere for an estimated 40 to 150 years, transitioning ....
