Status of Plastic Pollution in India
- India generates around 3.4 million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste every year of which only 30 per cent of it is recycled.
- Over a five-year period, the plastic consumption in the country has risen at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7 per cent to 14 MT in the financial year 2016-17 to 20 million tonnes in 2019-20.
- Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu together contribute 38 per cent to the total plastic waste that is generated in India.
