NASA’s Prototype Telescope for Gravitational Wave Study
In October 2024, NASA introduced a new telescope prototype designed to study gravitational waves in outer space, developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission.
- The LISA mission is slated for launch by 2030, marking a significant step in advancing space-based gravitational wave research.
Mission Overview
- The LISA mission aims to investigate gravitational waves by deploying three spacecraft in a triangular formation, each positioned 1.6 million miles apart in Earth's orbit.
- Each spacecraft will be equipped with two telescopes to detect infrared laser beams transmitted from the other spacecraft.
