​India Approves Launch of 52 Spy Satellites

On 7th October 2024, India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the third phase of the Space Based Surveillance (SBS-III) project, which includes the launch of 52 spy satellites aimed at strengthening the country's surveillance capabilities amid security concerns from neighbouring nations.

  • The SBS-III, with a budget of approximately Rs 27,000 crore, follows the earlier launches of satellites under previous phases initiated in 2001 and 2013.

Objectives of the New Satellites

  • The 52 satellites will be launched over a five-year period to bolster monitoring of India’s land and sea borders, particularly concerning threats from Pakistan and China.
