​New Snake Eel Species Discovered in Odisha

In May 2024, scientists at the Zoological Survey of India's (ZSI) Regional Centre in Gopalpur, Odisha, identified a new species of snake eel from various estuarine environments across the state.

  • At least six specimens of the newly discovered snake eel, named 'Ophichthus suryai', were collected from different rivers in Odisha last year.
