Answer: The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992 established the system of Gram Panchayats and granted them constitutional status. This amendment came into effect on April 24, 1993.
- The 73rd Amendment added a new Part IX to the Constitution titled "Panchayats," which includes provisions from Articles 243 to 243(O). A new Eleventh Schedule was also added, which lists 29 subjects under the jurisdiction of Panchayats.
