A Sip of Pollution: The Toxic Convenience of Bottled Water
- India ranks among the top 10 countries in the world for demand for plastic-packaged bottled water.
- The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) analysed 17 bottled water brands from Delhi and 13 from Mumbai and found traces of five different pesticides in most of them.
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is the most commonly used plastic for making water bottles and is harmful to the environment.
- Each ton of PET production generates about 3 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂).
- India’s bottled water industry alone emits about 30,000 tons of CO₂ annually from transportation, equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of 6,000 ....
