Perseverance Mars Rover Extracts Oxygen on Mars

Achieving a major milestone, the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) aboard NASA's Perseverance rover was, for the first time, able to extract oxygen from the thin Martian atmosphere.

  • MOXIE is a technology demonstrator and was designed to ensure the instrument survived the launch from Earth, a nearly seven-month journey through deep space and touchdown with Perseverance.
  • It produced about 5 grams of oxygen from carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere, enough for an astronaut to breathe for 10 minutes. The instrument is designed to generate up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour.
