Blackbuck Population doubles in Odisha

The blackbuck population in Odisha has doubled in the last six years, according to the latest census data released recently by the forest department of the state.

  • In Odisha, blackbucks (Antilope cervicapra) are confined to Balukhand-Konark coastal plain/wildlife sanctuary in Puri District and Balipadar-Bhetnoi and adjacent areas in Ganjam District. The animal is also found in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Rajasthan, Gujarat and some other areas.
  • According to census figures, the antelopes numbered 7,358 - 4,196 females, 1,712 males and 1,450 young ones.
