  • 22 Apr 2025

On 21st April 2025, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) pproved Google’s Rs. 20.24 crore settlement in the Android TV case, marking the first resolution under the 2024 Settlement Regulations.

  • The case originated from a complaint by Kshitiz Arya and Purushottam Anand, alleging Google’s abuse of dominance in the Android TV ecosystem under Section 19(1)(a) of the Competition Act.
  • Google, along with Xiaomi and TCL, was accused of imposing restrictive agreements on OEMs, including compulsory bundling of the Play Store and limitations on developing rival Android versions.
  • The investigation confirmed Google’s dominance in India’s smart TV OS and app store markets and found that agreements like TADA and ACC imposed unfair conditions.
  • These agreements allegedly forced OEMs to pre-install Google apps and restricted alternative Android developments, which hurt competition and innovation.
