EPFO Launches Face Authentication for UAN Activation

On 9th April 2025, the EPFO introduced a new Aadhaar-based Face Authentication feature via the UMANG app to simplify and secure the process of generating and activating Universal Account Numbers.

The new facility allows employees to independently generate and activate their UANs without relying on employer input, promoting a contactless and seamless experience.
Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) automatically validates personal details and fills in information from the Aadhaar database, reducing manual errors.
The mobile number is verified against the one linked with Aadhaar, ensuring that the UAN is securely activated and the employee can instantly access EPFO services.
During the financial year 2024–25, only 35.3% of the 1.26 crore UANs allotted were activated by members, indicating a pressing need for a simpler activation process.
To use the service, users must install both the UMANG and AadhaarFaceRD apps, enter their Aadhaar and linked mobile number, provide consent, and capture a live photo.
