- 09 Apr 2025
On 5th April 2025, the 2025 Breakthrough Prizes celebrated trailblazing achievements in physics, life sciences, and mathematics, honouring over 13,500 scientists across the globe.
- The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded to 13,508 physicists from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb collaborations at CERN for their pioneering work on the Higgs boson and particle physics.
- The four collaborations explored how the Higgs boson imparts mass to particles, confirmed the symmetry-breaking mechanism of mass generation, and discovered new strongly interacting particles.
- In Life Sciences, five researchers won the award for their work on GLP-1 hormone, which led to the development of the weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy.
- Researchers Alberto Ascherio and Stephen L. Hauser were awarded for uncovering the link between Epstein-Barr virus and Multiple Sclerosis, and for developing B-cell-targeted MS therapies.
- David R Liu received the Life Sciences prize for pioneering gene-editing techniques—base editing and prime editing—that enable precise DNA alterations without cutting the double helix.
