Indore to Launch India’s First Green Waste Plant

  • 19 Mar 2025

Indore is set to become the first city in India to establish a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model-based green waste processing plant under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, converting green waste into eco-friendly resources.

  • The green waste processing plant, built on 55,000 square feet of land in Bicholi Hapsi, will recycle wood, branches, leaves, and flowers into sustainable products.
  • The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will earn approximately Rs 3,000 per tonne in royalty for supplying wood and branches to the facility.
  • The city generates around 30 tons of green waste daily, which can increase to 60-70 tons during peak seasons like autumn, necessitating efficient waste management solutions.
  • Large tree branches will be repurposed at the Green Waste Processing Plant at City Forest, while waste from major institutions will be collected under a structured fee system.
  • A private firm (Astronomical Industries) will partner with IMC to process the waste into sawdust, which will undergo a drying process over 3-4 months to reduce moisture content by 90%.
  • The sawdust produced will be transformed into eco-friendly alternatives such as fuel pellets, plastic-free packing materials, biodegradable disposable plates, and fertilizers for agricultural use.
  • The IMC will provide land and handle transportation of green waste, while Astronomical Industries will oversee installation, operation, and maintenance of the plant.
