Mark Carney Becomes Canada’s New Prime Minister

On 9th March 2025, Former central banker Mark Carney won the leadership of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister, securing 86% of the vote in the party contest.

Carney defeated former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, with just under 152,000 party members casting their votes in the leadership race.
His victory comes at a critical time as Canada faces a trade war with the U.S. under President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canadian exports.
Carney criticized Trump for attacking Canadian workers, businesses, and families, vowing to take unprecedented actions to defend the economy.
