Indigenous Life Support System for LCA Tejas

  • 06 Mar 2025

On 5th March 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted high-altitude trials of an indigenous Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas.

Key Points

  • Indigenous Innovation: The On-Board Oxygen Generating System-based (OBOGS) ILSS ensures a continuous supply of breathable oxygen for aircrew, replacing traditional liquid oxygen cylinder systems.
  • Successful Testing: The Bengaluru-based Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) conducted the trials in the LCA-PV-3 aircraft, meeting rigorous aero-medical and flight condition standards up to 50,000 feet.
  • Versatile Application: With modifications, the system can be integrated into MiG-29K and other fighter aircraft.
  • Indigenization Efforts: Manufactured by Larsen & Toubro as a development-cum-production partner, the system comprises 90% indigenous components, strengthening India’s defence self-reliance.
