  • 14 Apr 2025

On 13th April 2025, India demonstrated its advanced 30-kilowatt Laser Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system in Andhra Pradesh, marking its entry into the global elite with the ability to shoot down aircraft, missiles, and drone swarms.

Key Points

  • Successful Field Trial: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful field trial of the DEW MK-II(A), a vehicle-mounted laser weapon system developed by CHESS, Hyderabad.
  • Target Elimination: The demonstration showcased the laser system’s ability to disable fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and swarm drones by causing structural damage and disrupting onboard sensors.
  • Elite Global Club: The trials were conducted at Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, and marked India’s entry into a select group of nations—alongside the US, China, and Russia—that possess such advanced capabilities.
  • Ammunition-Free Defence: The DEW system is designed to use high-intensity, precision laser beams to neutralize aerial threats without the use of traditional ammunition.
