AIIMS to Install India's First Indigenous MRI Machine
- 26 Mar 2025
On 25th March 2025, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, announced that it will install the country’s first indigenously developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine by October this year.
Key Points
- Indigenous Development: The MRI machine is being developed in partnership with the Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
- Awaiting Clinical Trials: SAMEER is awaiting approval for clinical and human trials, as India currently lacks a mechanism to validate MRI machines domestically.
- Installation Timeline: AIIMS officials confirmed that the 1.5 Tesla MRI machine is expected to be installed within seven months, by October 2025.
- Reducing Import Dependency: The initiative aligns with the Centre’s push for indigenous innovation to reduce reliance on imported medical devices. Currently, 80-85% of India’s medical device needs are met through imports.
